Burleson
County, in east central Texas, lies approximately forty-five miles east of the
state capital at Austin and is bordered by Milam County on the north, on the
east by Robertson and Brazos counties, on the south by Washington County, and
on the west by Lee County. Caldwell, the largest town and the county seat, is
sixty miles east of Austin. In 2005 approximately 17,238 people lived in Burleson
County. Since 1967 Somerville Lake, an 11,160-acre reservoir on Yegua Creek
near the town of Somerville has provided recreation, tourism revenue, and much-needed
flood protection for the residents of Burleson County. One of the big attractions
in the Fall is the annual Kolache Festival in Caldwell, bringing thousands of
visitors to the area each year.
