Waller County shares borders with Harris and Montgomery counties to the East, Fort Bend and Austin counties to the South and Grimes County to the North. Hempstead, the county's seat and largest city, is twenty-five miles northwest of Houston. In 2005 approximately 30,000 people lived in Waller County. Waller County is the home of Prairie View A&M University. Hempstead hosts a watermelon festival in July, and the Waller County Festival is held in October.
